Women and Oceans
A Think Tank funded by the European Commission

This Think Tank draws on knowledge rooted in close relationships with the sea and works to turn research into action.

  • Its first aim is to translate academic knowledge into forms that speak to policy and real-world decision-making, so that expertise does not remain confined to universities or reports but reaches those who shape international agendas.

  • A second focus lies on public discourse and media language. The Think Tank challenges the way the ocean and ocean-connected lives are described in news, policy documents, and institutional narratives. Much of this language remains adapted to land-based realities and fails to capture the conditions, rhythms, and vulnerabilities of life shaped by water. Changing how the ocean is spoken about forms a central part of changing how it is governed.

  • Finally, the Think Tank defends the legitimacy of aquatic lives and supports stakeholders who depend on marine environments. It treats ocean-connected practices and forms of knowledge as politically relevant and socially valid, not as marginal or symbolic.

Through these combined efforts, the Think Tank seeks to generate impact across policy, media, and governance, and to promote approaches to the ocean that reflect its cultural, environmental, and social complexity.
